                                INSTRUCTION / INFORMATION MEMO

TO:                Guidance Counselors and seniors (at Glens Falls and Queensbury
                       High Schools)

FROM:     THE GLENS FALLS ROTARY CLUB

DATE:           December 1, 2009

SUBJECT:    ROTARY’S COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

In 2008, The Glens Falls Rotary Club discontinued the practice of recognizing “students of the year” at the two local school districts. Instead, we introduced a scholarship program intended to salute students who have demonstrated outstanding service to our community. Based on the success of our 2008 and 2009 scholarship competitions, we are excited to announce that we will again offer this scholarship in 2010.

Here are the salient points of “The 2010 Rotary Community Service Scholarship”:

• Rotary is offering two scholarships of UP TO $2,500 each (the final award may be less than $2,500).

• Applicants must be seniors at either Queensbury or Glens Falls High School.

• Applicants must have a “B” average and it must be confirmed by the respective Guidance Counselor on the Guidance Counselor Certification Form attached below. DO NOT submit completed transcripts and DO NOT submit Guidance Counselor college recommendation letters.

• Applicants must complete the Scholarship application in paper form which can be found on-line and may be downloaded from our web site www.glensfallsrotary.com. Paper applications also may be obtained from the school Guidance Counselor. All completed documents must be mailed to The Rotary Club, PO Box 4702, Queensbury, NY 12804.

• Applicants must provide a brief letter of recommendation from an organization which benefited from the student’s service, describing the impact of his or her involvement.

• Applications must be received by February 28, 2010.

• Finalists will be asked to meet with a panel of Rotarians for a brief interview before the winning candidates are selected.

• Winners will be announced before or during the month of May, 2010, and the awards will be presented at a Rotary Club luncheon meeting in May, 2010.

• Questions may be directed to Kathie Duncan, Chairman of the Rotary Scholarship Committee, either via email: (kduncan@adirondacktrust.com) or cell phone: 518-337 6954.

NOTE: Children and grandchildren of Rotarians are NOT eligible to apply for this scholarship.

To help you prepare for the application process the following are some potential questions that might be used by the Scholarship Committee of the Glens Falls Rotary Club:

• Tell us something about yourself that does not appear in your application.

• Who is your most influential role model?  Why?

• What do you know about Rotary? About the Rotary Club of Glens Falls, NY?

• “Service above Self” is the Rotary motto. What does this mean to you? How will you take these ideals and expand upon them in your future?

• What keeps you busy during the week?

• What criteria did you use to select the community service activities in which you are involved?

• Describe the community service activity you are most passionate about. How does this differ from any other community service activities that you may be involved with?

• Where do you see yourself in five years?
